Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and were able to enjoy some quality time with your families sharing in love, joy and holiday traditions.

Now that 2018 has wrapped up and our schedules at work begin to fill up as we prepare for this new year, don’t forget to stay informed on the annual legislative & state updates sent out to us from APA. If you are not a member of APA, this is a great time to consider membership in order to stay up to date on all the changes impacting payroll. As a chapter, we do our best to keep you informed as well through updates made on our Government & Legislative page. Be sure to log-in often to see the updates as they get posted.

The Board of Directors will be holding our annual election in February. Serving on the Board is a great opportunity for you to help with the planning and activities offered by the Chapter. If you have wanted to get more involved with the Chapter or want to help make an impact on our Payroll community, consider running for a position on the Board. We are still accepting nominations and I would love to have you join us! Remember, together we can connect, grow and keep our Chapter strong!

Our annual Awards Celebration will be held in March. We announced at the December meeting that we will be changing the process for the award of Dallas Chapter Payroll Professional of the Year. Instead of the board choosing the individual for the award, we will accept nominations and applications for this prestigious honor. We will then have one of our sister chapters review the applications and choose our winner. Be sure to watch for an email this month which will provide all the details about this process.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who participated in our survey to help us determine where we should hold our luncheons in 2019. It was a very close vote, but the membership chose the Double Tree Hotel location as their top choice. We also received overwhelming responses for keeping buffet lunch options, so we will work closely with the Chef at the Hotel to come up with some great menu options. However, please know that there will be occasions where a plated meal works best.

Welcome to 2019!

2018 was a great year and we have a few short months remaining in our chapter fiscal year. We are very close to our goal of 303 members. We can do this!

Dallas Chapter Payroll Professional of the Year!

Something new for our members in 2019 as we prepare for our annual awards celebration is the nomination and application form for PPY. So excited about this new platform! Watch for the update email coming in a few short weeks along with the forms……we have partnered with a sister chapter to do the grading of the applications and look forward to announcing the winner.

Awards Night Celebration!

Save this date! March 14, 2019 for our annual award celebration! We have a great keynote speaker all the way from New York City! Plans are underway, so we will have much more information forthcoming in the month ahead.

Change for Change

Our 2018 was a huge success with the DAPA members and guests donating $800 to the Change for Change program in partnership with Williams Chicken. We are looking forward to 2019!

Eye on Education

                                                       REGISTRATION IS OPEN!

We heard from quite a few and know many of you are testing in the spring testing window. We listened and are pleased to announce that we will be conducting 2 full class series and a calculation class prior to when the spring testing window opens in March.

Payroll Practice Fundamentals (FPC) which will begin on Saturday January 12th for 4 Saturdays from 8AM to 4PM with a one- hour lunch offers 28 RCH. The cost of the registration includes the APA 2018 Payroll Practice Fundamentals book as well as the presentations and other reference materials distributed in class.

The Mastering Payroll Concepts (CPP) class will be 5 Saturdays beginning on Saturday February 9th from 8AM to 5PM with a one-hour lunch offers 40 RCH. The cost of the registration includes the APA 2018 Payroll Source as well as the presentations and other reference materials distributed in class.

We will finish out the series with a one-day 2018 Calculations Class on March 16th just one week prior to when the Spring exam window opens on March 23rd which offers 7 RCH.

All classes will take place at the La Quinta Inns and Suites, 14925 Landmark Drive, Dallas Texas. So, whether you are taking your exam or need recertification credits, don’t let these opportunities pass you by.

Government Relations Updates

IRS Releases 2019 Publication 15. Publication 15, Circular E, Employer’s Tax Guide, includes the updated withholding tables and shows the updated amounts for withholding allowances. Click here to see updated Circular E.

IRS Releases 2019 Form W-4. Click here to see 2019 form W-4.

IRS Releases 2019 Wage Levy Exemption Amount Tables. Publication 1494 shows the tables with the exempt wages from a Notice of Levy used to collect delinquent federal income taxes. Click here to see Publication 1494.

IRS Announces Increase to Business Standard Mileage Rate for 2019. The business standard mileage rate for transportation expenses paid or incurred beginning in January 2019 will be $0.58 (58 cents) per mile. This is up from the 54.5 cents-per mile rate from 2018. Click here for more information.

IRS Provides Clarification on Reporting New W-2 Box 12 Codes. The IRS has provided clarification on reporting the new Box 12 codes GG and HH.
